August Fishing Report, Yellowfish Running Strong

August is one of the most consistent months of the year on the Vaal. Water levels have dropped to a stable 1.2 m after the late-season rains, clarity is good at roughly 60 cm, and water temperature has settled around 16°C, cold enough to push the fish into their predictable winter holds but not so cold they've shut down completely.

What's biting

Smallmouth yellowfish are the primary target through August. They're holding in the deeper, slower pools on the upstream side of the property, particularly the run below the large rocky outcrop at Stand 3. Fish are stacked in 1 to 2 m of water and respond well to a slow retrieve.

Largemouth yellowfish have been less consistent but not absent. We've had reports of fish to 3 kg taken on the fly in the riffles between Stands 4 and 5 during the warmest part of the afternoon (13:00 to 15:00). Use a Woolly Bugger or a small nymph on a sink-tip and work slowly.

Common carp are active throughout the property. Bottom fishing with boilies (fruity or fishmeal) on a hair rig has been producing fish from 2 to 6 kg consistently from all stands. Corn on a simple ledger rig works equally well from the banks.

Bait and tackle tips for August

Keep rigs simple in winter. Fish are slower and more cautious, a subtle presentation outperforms heavy terminal tackle every time. For yellowfish: 4 to 6 lb fluorocarbon leader, size 10 to 14 hook, split-shot weight only where needed. For carp: standard bolt rig with 15 lb mono, 2 to 3 oz lead, and a pop-up boilie hair rig.

Pre-baiting your spot 30 minutes before fishing makes a measurable difference in August. Drop a handful of boilies or ground bait on the mark before you set up, then walk away. The fish need longer to commit in cold water.

Best times on the water

Dawn (05:30 to 08:00) remains the most productive session in August. Air temperature can drop to 4°C overnight, which means the first light sees fish starting to move as the sun hits the water. Evening sessions (16:00 to 18:30) are productive for carp. Midday is slow for most species, use it for rig preparation.
